Here are the steps necessary to
correctly publish using Microsoft's Frontpage Web Site Builder with both
FTP and HTTP protocols. However if you have special features resident
only to Frontpage you will need to upload via HTTP or else risk losing
those Frontpage exclusive programming features.
Before publishing your website, it may be necessary to choose Options > Publish All Pages, to overwrite any files already on the server.
You will need the following information before you start.
- Domain name
- FTP Username
- FTP Password
Frontpage has a built in FTP client for you to use. It is a basic FTP client and can not manage the other functions of an FTP client very well.
-- Go to the File menu, click on Publish Web. -- A screen will pop up prompting you for a location to connect to. -- Enter in " ftp://yourdomain.com " and then press OK
Once again a screen will pop up this time prompting you for a
username and password to enter the server. Fill out both fields with
the appropriate information, your FTP username and Password
respectively. NOTE: This information is the same as if you were to
open a 3rd party FTP client and connect.
This screen is a sample of what should show up. The left side is your local computer where you can select (Green Check) or de-select (Red X) which files and folders you wish to upload to the server. The right side of the screen is the directory listing on the server of the files and folders. Be sure to upload to the correct domain name directory on the server side.
Once you have selected the files click the Publish button in the bottom right corner to start to upload.
You have now uploaded your files via FTP protocol with Frontpage's built-in FTP client. Go to your website to view the changes.
HTTP Transfer
Frontpage has certain special additions and programming shortcuts which can only be used by the Frontpage Extensions. You must upload view HTTP to preserve these settings on the pages you made on your local machine.
-- Go to the File menu, click on Publish Web. -- A screen will pop up prompting you for a location to connect to. -- Enter in " http://yourdomain.com " and then press OK
Once again a screen will pop up this time prompting you for a username and password to enter the server. Fill out both fields with the appropriate information, your Frontpage username and Password respectively. If your program prompts you for the domain name enter it in the form of " yourdomain.com " do not enter "www.yourdomain.com" This will not work because the www is not part of the domain name. It is part of your hosting service.

Open Web
An alternate way to edit your webpage is to build it directly on the website. This is called Onsite Development. Frontpage allows for this with it's OPEN web feature which is integrated with Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP.
-- Go to the File menu, click on Publish Web. -- A screen will pop up prompting you for a web name to connect to. -- Enter in " http://yourdomain.com " and then press Open
Once again a screen will pop up this time prompting you for a
username and password to enter the server. Fill out both fields with
the appropriate information, your Frontpage username and Password
respectively. If your program prompts you for the domain name enter it in
the form of " yourdomain.com " do not enter "www.yourdomain.com"
This will not work because the www is not part of the domain name. It is
part of your hosting service.
This will connect you to the website directly where you can edit the files LIVE on your website and see the changes instantly on your website.
