The easiest method to accept payments online is through a 3rd party facility such as

However, using Paypal and other 3rd party facilities take the customer off your website and on to their own servers to process payments. Generally, this is not an issue since it's still a very secure way of processing credit card payments, and your customer is returned to your website after completion.
If you want to ensure customers stay on your website throughout the entire ordering process, you will need a merchant facility with a bank. When a customer's credit card is charged, the funds must be transferred into your bank account. So how does this happen? Without going into too much technical detail, the customer's bank needs to receive a request for those funds to be taken out of the credit card.
